Scare design & jump scare consultancy

Fear is engineering. The best scares aren't louder. They're better placed, better timed and better hidden. Dread Works designs scares that work every time, for the thousandth guest on a Saturday in October and for one viewer alone with a film.

We study where the audience looks, when they breathe and what they expect, and then we use all of it against them.

Scare mechanics

Drop panels, reveals, misdirection, distraction and false safety, designed around sight lines and audience flow.

Training and blocking for scare actors covering positioning, timing, voice and safety, so performers get the scream every time.

Item 03

Pacing & tension curves

Mapping the rhythm of a whole experience, from quiet to build to release to recovery, so the fear keeps escalating.

Item 04

Headline moments for film, games and stage, set up properly so they shock rather than annoy.

Item 05

Maze & route flow

Layout reviews that keep throughput high without stretching groups so thin that the scares die.

Scare audits

A walk-through of your existing attraction or edit, with a prioritised list of fixes.

Procedure

How it
works

  1. 01

    Walk it

We go through it the way your audience does, whether that's on site, on screen or on the page.

  2. 02

    Map it

We plot every scare, every lull and every sight line on a tension map.

  3. 03

    Rig it

We design new scares and rebuild weak ones, with clear briefs for build, cast and crew.

  4. 04

    Run it

We rehearse, watch real audiences and tune the timing until it lands.

Questions
asked

What makes a jump scare effective?

An effective jump scare depends on anticipation and misdirection. The audience has to be primed to expect something, then caught from an angle or at a moment they didn't predict. Timing, the silence beforehand and a clear release afterwards matter more than volume.

Do you train scare actors?

Yes. We run scare actor workshops covering positioning, timing, vocal work, character and safe practice, for attractions and immersive events.

Can you audit our haunted attraction?

Yes. We walk your attraction as a guest, then deliver a prioritised report on dead zones, weak scares, flow problems and quick wins before opening night.
